Electrical Engineer

Reports to: Operations & Grid Director
Location: Durham
Division: Grid and Operations

Overall Objectives:
The Electrical Engineer will be crucial in supporting our client’s journey to net-zero. The role involves developing, building, and operating renewable energy projects, including onshore wind farms, solar parks, battery storage, and other flexible energy generation sites.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the Operations and Grid Director in optimising grid connections.

  • Assist the business development team with grid input and assessments.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments, including site analysis and grid connection studies.

  • Estimate ongoing charges for future projects.

  • Prepare and submit G99 and/or transmission applications.

  • Manage the delivery and progress of multiple grid connection contracts.

  • Handle grid payments, including securities and liabilities.

  • Resolve technical, legal, or commercial queries in grid offers.

  • Improve efficiencies through data analysis and reviews of energy use and losses on operational assets.

  • Provide Independent Connection Provider and electrical balance of plant tendering support.

  • Deliver technical input to service energy market understanding and opportunities.

  • Develop technical specifications and requirements for electrical components and systems.

  • Draft requirements for tendering and review tender submissions.

  • Ensure projects comply with UK regulations, standards, and safety protocols.

  • Stay updated with advancements in renewable energy technologies and industry best practices.

  • Provide training and mentorship to less experienced engineers and other team members.

Key Performance Objectives:

  • Grid assessment turnaround times.

  • Grid connections management – cost/time/quality.

  • Independent Connection Provider (ICP) and electrical balance of plant tender scope accuracy and programme delivery.

  • Adhere to the Health and Safety Plan and relevant legislation and guidance.

Key Contacts:

  • Reports directly to the Operations and Grid Director.

  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, civil engineers, project managers, planners, and environmental scientists.

  • Interacts with external stakeholders like Distribution Network Operators, Transmission owners, Electricity Systems Operators, and Independent Connection providers.

  • Represents the company at networking events when required.

Working Environment:
Based at the Rainton Bridge Head Office with visits to the Hamilton, Scotland office, project sites, and DNO offices.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:
Essential:

  • Graduate or equivalent in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Minimum 5 years’ PQE within a renewable energy networks company or consultancy.

  • Experience in HV/EHV.

  • Interest in decarbonisation, net-zero, networks, and generation.
